I've been in the music business most of my life and eventually found myself playing music I didn't really want to play for the sake of the gig. I was pleasing the crowd to pay the rent instead of being the creative artist I longed to be. I wrote the song around a circus theme for obvious reasons. I still love pleasing the crowd - I need to please them, but I need to please myself artistically as well.
Step right up, come on in
If you dare to look within
Hurry, hurry, the show's about to start
But I'm not for the weak at heart
I'm the Girl On The Wire
The sideshow freak who swallows fire
I can make the people shout
When my head's inside the lion's mouth
I have the top of the pyramid view
Don't I amaze and astonish you
You close your eyes and hold your breath
You know that I'm defying death
I'm the clown who leads the parade
The ring master of this charade
I appear to fly with ease
I'm the daring young woman on the flying trapeze
Ladies and Gentlemen, children of all ages
Come see the wild woman rattle the cages
But don't get too close, better keep your hands inside
That's fair warning if you're gonna come along for the ride
Under this tent, inside these three rings
The spotlight shows everything
You cross your fingers, you place your bets
As I work without a net
I'm the Girl On The Wire
With nerves of steel you all admire
I throw daggers inches away
So close I can make a non-believer pray
Hey, I'm the Girl On The Wire
I want to please you so I go higher
I'm an illusion, I have no fear
I wave my magic wand and disappear
